Cube action
Most beginners know, that making the 5-point is extremely desirable. Advanced players also know, there are exceptions to that rule. In trying to do better than a beginner and be more creative they look for positions, where making the 5-point is not the best play. That is certainly a good approach, as long as you do not start underestimating the power of the 5-point.
This position is one example. White wants to contain Green's back checkers. Especially blocking sixes from the 2-point anchor may be important. I guess that was the main argument, why John did not make the 5-point, but the 8-point instead, even under the protest of his teammates (beginners for sure). Another reason could be, that Green needs to leave a few blots against White's 3-point board. Unfortunately this is a position, where White just has to make the 5-point - everything else is a blunder.
I think it is not White's highest priority to contain Green. He is leading the race by a wide margin already. White wants to extricate his back checker and win the race. If he can take advantage of Green's somewhat stripped and unconnected position, he will do that too. This game will be going for some time and having the 5-point locked down will almost certainly make a difference. There is the risk of being hit by a fly shot, but with the 5-point White can welcome the opportunity to hit back.
