NEWEST WILDEBEEST RELEASES

Turn On

The Powerknobs

Detroit, move over--Chicago is about to match your garage-rock strut, thanks to the release of "Turn On" by the Windy City's Powerknobs. Steeped in the savage sounds of the Sonics, Iggy Pop, and the MC5, the Powerknobs kick out the jams with a winking leer on songs like "My Baby's in the C.I.A.," "Sorority Shakedown," and "Skirts Up!" Master of garage-rock mastering Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Mooney Suzuki) took the Powerknobs trademark wall of fuzz and mayhem, pushed the Vu meters into the red, and squeezed out a sound that kicks like a boot to the groin. In other words, Clay Aiken fans will find much to hate about "Turn On."

Aside from the primal roar of their guitar-organ-bass-drums attack, what separates the Powerknobs from the garage rock throng is their songwriting: where else can you hear an apocalyptic pick-up line like "Come on, baby, let's proliferate" from the lead-off track "Gas Mask A-Go-Go"? Or how about the randy colonial come-on of "Wild Colonial Boy"? The Powerknobs are serious about not taking themselves or their music too seriously. Which is one reason why their fans are rabid in their devotion to these five ruffians. Until now, only Chicagoans could enjoy their raucous shenanigans at their many live shows. But with this release, the rest of the world will soon experience a "Youth Culture Explosion" when they tune out everything else and "Turn On" the Powerknobs.

Crimson and Clover
Various Artists

Tommy James & the Shondells ruled the charts and the airwaves during the latter 1960's. But today their music is relegated to a few of their biggest hits recycled endlessly on oldies radio.

"Crimson and Clover" corrects this injustice by offering fresh reinterpretations of familiar Shondells classics as well as covers of little-known TJ gems such as "Love's Closin' in on Me" and "Gingerbread Man." Thirteen artists, including the Boss Martians, Coffee Sergeants, Herman the German, Waistcoats, Slow Slushy Boys, Downbeat 5, Saturn V, Rapiers, and many more, pay tribute to Tommy's great legacy. Plus, as an added bonus, Tommy James himself appears with a recent recording of the first of his songs ever to be covered, "Sugar on Sunday."
