Head Coach Mark Richt
“I’m excited to start the season, it won’t be long now. We all know
we are playing a great team, there is a lot of buzz around Oklahoma
State for a lot of reasons, number one being that their offense has
been so tremendous over the last season. They are well-coached, they
have a lot of momentum going right now. They finished strong last
year and improved their record from the year before and now they are
looking to make a splash nationally. I think a lot of people look at
them as a possible darkhorse to win their league.”
**The Bulldogs own an
all-time Sanford Stadium record of 62-15-1 in home openers. Georgia
has won its home opener 10 consecutive years. The last time Georgia
lost its home opener was 1996, falling 11-7 to Southern Mississippi
in former coach Jim Donnan’s debut.
**Current head coach Mark Richt is 6-0 in season openers and 6-0 in
home openers. Under Richt, the Bulldogs are 25-2 against
non-conference foes including 17-0 in Sanford Stadium.
**Overall, Richt’s Bulldogs are 32-6 at home. The last time Georgia
lost a non-conference game at home was during the Donnan era in
2000.
**Georgia is the only SEC
team to be ranked in the AP Top 25 ten straight seasons.
**Georgia’s special teams
features one of the nation’s top returning place kickers in senior
Brandon Coutu. His 55-yard FG against UAB tied for the fifth-longest
in Division I-A in 2006. He is a perfect 65-for-65 in PATs for
his career.
**One
of the more interesting rule changes by the NCAA in the offseason
involved moving the kickoff five yards back to the 30.
**The 2006 season marked
the 50th anniversary of the Uga legacy of mascots at the University
of Georgia. The current mascot, Uga VI (“Uga V’s Whatchagot Loran”),
has an eight-year record of 76-25. At 65 pounds he’s the biggest of
all the Ugas and just one win away from tying Uga IV for the most
wins by an Uga.
