Vocals, Guitar, Mandalloyd, Bass
I have been surrounded by music my
whole life. While most kids were playing ball, my Mom made sure I
made it to piano lessons or the church choir. I remember at the
age of about 8 sitting on the arm of the couch watching the
string bass player in my older brother Ron's band the Del Reys. I
thought they were totally cool, they even opened for Buddy Holly
and Brenda Lee at the Austin City Coliseum. Between that and
seeing what happened when the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan
Show, I knew what I had to do....
I have now been a part of the Austin music community for over 30 years, starting with playing the string bass in the University of Texas String Project at age 12. At age 16 I heard my first Jimi Hendrix album and the rest is history! I played electric bass and sang vocals for many years with a variety of different cover bands like Springfield West and The Drifters of Victoria.
As I became involved in the Austin original-music scene I toured
and recorded with some great musicians like Vince Mariani, Van
Wilks/Fools (Mercury Records), Eric Johnson (Capitol Records),
and Jay Aaron (Warner Brothers). We had the opportunity to open
shows for acts like Heart, Journey, ZZ Top, Santana, Cheap Trick,
Willie Nelson, Moody Blues, and Blue Oyster Cult.
In 1996 my uncle, Lloyd Pratt turned me on to an instrument he
had played for many years. It's kind of like a tenor guitar, but
it isn't. And, it's kind of like a mandolin, but it isn't. I call
it a mandalloyd, and it's got a really sweet sound. The music we
play in Three Good Reasons allows me to play the mandalloyd, as
well as electric-acoustic bass, string bass, and 6-string
acoustic. Jayne, Bill and I have been friends for years, and 3GR
is our opportunity to play the songs we love including some great
original music.
