About the play
Canadian John Mighton's short play, with its characters obsessed with necrophilia and virtual sex, is a deft, witty and haunting look at the relationship--if any--between body and soul.
What the critics said . . .
"Why can't we be happy with what we have? Isn't it better to fulfill our dreams than to always analyze them? Such are the questions raised by 'Body and Soul,' the poisonous comedy by Canadian playwright John Mighton, intelligently produced by the Subterranean Theatre Company. . . . As Jane, Katherine Catmull grabs most of our attention with a brittle, edgy manner that's a perfect match withfor Mighton's literate and darkly humo rous script. The nearly minimal set and staging keeps this neat little play appropriately slick. It could be tempting to sensaltionalize Mighton's bizarre examination of the connection between body and soul. Thankfully, director Ken Webster keeps it nice and tidy."
Austin American Statesman
"The play is provocative, and (also typical for a Subterranean Theatre Company production) the cast is a talented one. Katherine Catmull as Jane, Eric Peterson as Henry, and Jenni Rall as Sally bring plenty to the table as performers. In multiple roles, Corey Gagne, with his slightly manic enthusiasm, often steals the scene right out from under everyone. Shannon Grounds, as a virtual reality scientist, turns in an effective scene selling her own brand of futurism. Director Ken Webster keeps things simple and stark. . . . Webster's sound design matches the emotional quality of the scenes, a synthesized feedback underscoring the more bizarre passages and a mournful, bluesy piano accentuating others.
