About the play
Five sisters live in a small Alabama town where it hasn't rained in 30 or 40 years. Monty Lou has been pregnant for almost as long, and Laurie Laurie has died but refuses to go away. This odd mix of magic realism and Southern gothic was written by Heather McCutchen, author of 3 AM and the new sequel to Alabama Rain, Baby Showers.
What the critics said . . .
"One of the most delectable pleasures, as far as this job goes, is seeing veteran Austin actors cast in just the right vehicle. . . . When a play comes along--a good one--pitched directly to their voices, seemingly written for their peculiar sensibilities, you cannot help but be delighted. . . . Director Ken Webster manipulates the absurdity with a sure hand. . . . I can't say too many good things about this veteran actors' bonanza."
Austin American Statesman
"McCutchen's script is a wonderful concoction of of character studies and life lessons, and it has been brought beautifully to life by the Subterranean Theatre Company. . . . as refreshing as cool rain on parched earth. That's what this production is."
Austin Chronicle
"It's fascinating, good-humored, and the strangeness was certainly part of the fun--grand talent and execution in Alabama Rain."
