The
AIDS Clock,
Acrylic on canvas, 16"W x 20"H
The December 2, 1995 issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine included its 5th annual tribute to members of the entertainment industry lost to AIDS in the past year. The magazine presented 120 photographs in the 12/2/95 issue. The names of some of those people are listed along each side of The AIDS Clock.
This painting was completed on December 15, 1995, and delivered to Art Encounter in early 1996. The triangle-shaped clock face reveals that through 1995 there had been 300,000 deaths in the United States from AIDS. The various pendulums on the clock include the healthy (whole), the ill (partially fractured) and the dead (pendulum detached in several places with a black base). The winged angel of hope on the upper right is offset by the image of death on the lower left.
As of December 31, 2000, cumulative AIDS deaths in the United States had grown to 448,000. Through 2000, cumulative AIDS deaths worldwide were a staggering 21.8 million people, including 4.3 million children under the age of fifteen.
