My Life
A
man of varied names and experiences. Harold to his parents and
siblings, William to the US Air Force, Bill to his wife and friends,
and Mr Brown to High School Vocational Classes. Even ‘Hovis’
during a three year stint in England at South Ruislip. From delivering
the daily newspapers to teaching school, by far his greatest adventure
was flying. Starting
with lessons paid for by working at two part-time jobs at one
time, the first flying was in a small Taylor Craft while stationed
with the Air Force ROTC Detachment at Texas Christian University.
Years later, came a period of Air Force temporary duty to learn
the intricacies of Mid-Air Refueling and the Flight Position of
Boom Operator on a KC-135. After completion of this training at
Castle AFB in California, he was assigned to Seymour Johnson Air
Force Base, in Goldsboro, North Carolina which led to combat duty
in South East Asia. A bit more exciting than the long year in
Korea, dodging “Bed Check Charlie”, Back home, all
in one piece, more duty in N.C. to fly and survive tough operational
inspections and SAC Alert Duty.

Then off to
Puerto Rico, wife and daughter in tow, for three years of sunshine
and sea, and lots of flying as an Instructor in the Ramey Air
Force Base Aero Club. William trained fellow personnel to fly,
along with some fun flying to nearby islands.
Finally retired into Corporate Pilot status for three great years.
Visiting states from California to Louisiana, with executives
of a Life Insurance Company. A ‘crash and burn’ incident
in Tulsa, Oklahoma led to the end of the road for flying, in the
life of this Brown boy! Having survived one other such heart stopping
event on Wake Island, in which he had to watch eleven of his peers
lose their lives, this Pilot decided not to hang around for that
“third time that’s the charm”.

Life
has been a bit duller, but safer, since school teaching carried
him to a second retirement and a love affair with the Computer.
