A note that appears in HENRY MITCHELL ON GARDENING and in ONE MAN'S GARDEN is true of the essays in all four books: "The material in this volume originally appeared, in slightly different form, in the Washington Post."

Note: The original edition and the Houghton Mifflin editions were published under the title THE ESSENTIAL EARTHMAN. (3) The current edition (2003) is published by Indiana University Press and includes a subtitle: THE ESSENTIAL EARTHMAN: HENRY MITCHELL ON GARDENING. As of the time this site was established (31 December 2004), I had the following written permissions (or permissions conveyed electronically): from The Washington Post to cite materials which fall under their copyright; from Indiana University Press to reproduce the table of contents from THE ESSENTIAL EARTHMAN; from Nicholas Weber to post facsimiles of color slides he took in the Mitchells' garden. Verbal permission to reproduce photographs and materials from the books under her control was given by Virginia Mitchell, who also conveyed permission received informally from a senior editor of her acquaintance at Houghton Mifflin. I am in process of securing formal permission from Houghton Mifflin for materials under their copyright. I have not received, nor do I expect to receive, nor will I accept, any financial benefit from this web site or the links it contains.
