This was a busy and helpful week! People are so nice to me about my CI. I have to say thank you again to everyone who has wished me well recently and given me music and CD's and books on tape! I appreciate everyone's support! This week a co-worker named Kathy told me that my CI is amazing. I have known her for 14 years and I never lip-read her before. I taught her sign language and she always used sign for me to see. Now she is changing to use her voice so I can hear too. I am lip-reading lots and lots now. It makes such a difference to be able to hear their words with their speech that I can understand a lot more. Another co-worker Scott, lent me his son's books on tape (Disney childrens stories) so that I might practice listening and following along in the book. It was great because I had never seen the movies! Later in the week I was surprised by an old co-worker who has moved away, Trent sent me a wonderful CD with birds singing on it. I put it in my computer immediately and enjoyed this different type of music for my ears. I am continuing to go to speech therapy, where I use my external mic. Lisa always tells me I am doing very well - much more than she hoped for me. YEA! She loaned me "Hop On Pop" A monosyllabic (for the most part) beginner reader by Dr. Suess. I have to read it aloud everyday. I am also, this week, practicing consonant blends - Boy, there sure is a lot to this speaking thing! Not to mention learning English syntax and rules of grammer - this is a huge undertaking. She has stressed that my listening skills need to move along faster now - since my speech is going so well. The week ended with two friends coming up from San Antonio to visit me and we all went on the Annual Austin Pond Society Tour. It was wonderful to visit people's beautiful homes and see the wonderful ponds in their yards. I saw and HEARD 13 different ponds with waterfalls. It was so much fun to see and hear everything - it adds so much more dimension to the world and experience. |
