1st Day
The first thing I heard after
getting hooked up was my mom's voice. Allison (the
audiologist) asked who wanted to speak to me first and my
mom said "ma-ma" I heard it inside my brain. I can't say it
was hearing - but my brain felt all the talking and noises
around me. I thought it was funny - that is the sound babies
first recognize too, right? Ma-ma? ha ha Well I guess my
brain is a newborn, having never heard a sound all my life
of 46 years. We programmed another program so I have SAS and
CIS now. After the hook-up I had an appointment with my
doctor. I walked to the bathroom and was very surprised to
hear my own footsteps. I asked him if everyone sounded that
loud - he said yes. I heard the doorknob, the doors close,
computers beeping, phones ringing, unfortunately it all
sounded jumbled together and was hard to separate sounds. My
friend asked me if I could tell the difference between her
voice and my mother's - yes hers was higher and faster than
my mothers. WOW. On the way home everyone was passing around
a bag of chips....I got the bag and crunched it and crunched
it - everything makes a noise!!! I was so happy. I felt
overwhelmed but I liked it. Hearing things seems to give me
energy. Whenever I pull off the mic, it feels like a drain
in the silence. I listened to the TV and heard a lot of
noise. It seems that every show and commercial has music and
voices together. When I got home by myself - it was much
quieter. I could hear my own breathing and my voice. I took
off my grandmother's beautiful cross she gave me for my
surgery day and set it on the dresser. I was very surprised
to hear that it made a noise too - something that light! I
didn't know running water had a sound....it was a great
day!

headpiece looks like on
