Being a Chronicle of Anthony's Quest for a Web Page with a Decent Hit Count
Last updated Monday, January 25, 1999.
'Kay. I can't say much, because I don't want to queer the deal, but I just sent off a manuscript to a game company for review. Should have more info next week, until then I guess we'll both have to sit on pins and needles...
Though I've been working on the page for a while, this is the date I consider the page going "live", because this was the date I announced the existance of this page on the Pyramid message boards. The page went live with only a few sample characters for GURPS Lite and the Games That Have Changed My Life pages active. More to come very soon.
Finally got around to adding this very news page, and cleaned up several existing pages, redesigning them to conform to the rest of the site's dark look.
Urg. Got a response back from the game company, and the word on my RPG system is a resounding No. But I'm not bitter or anything, I really wasn't expecting it to fly - the system I submitted is very simplistic. How much so, you ask? We'll you'll find out soon - Professional Gaming's loss is your gain, and ONE (as I call the system) will soon grace this very web page! Huzzah!
MAJOR additions to the page today. ONE is up, check it out. Also added The Chronicle of Krag, System Shock 2, and Mood Music to the Writings page. Also fixed several broken links. More to come soon.
Whoa, two months without an update? People will start to think I have a life! And we can't have that now, can we? Added another GURPS Lite character, Kira, Apprentice Mage and finally got the GURPS Lite Combat Example done! Rat own!
Added some new versions of ONE, including a one-page "lite" version! Check them out at the ONE page.
Okay, I know the site hasn't been updated in a while. I'm sorry, but it's the holidays and all, updating the web page seems like a pretty low thing on the priority list. In any event, I figured I'd go ahead and put up some thoughts about what I'm working on now.
A new version of ONE with additional stuff to help GMs actually use the system is in the works; more on this later.
I've recently been doing some programming in DJGPP and Allegro. Every time I use these tools I come closer to the opinion that they are the best development tools you can get on the net (and they're free, free free). I've been trying to write an RPG for a while, I've been wondering what the best method to actually write the game might be. Should I program it all myself from the ground up? This would teach me a lot, but could take the rest of my life. Should I use a commercially available engine (like the Quake engine) and just model the game for it? This would be faster, but isn't really programming and my game may not end up looking like I envisioned it due to engine limitations I can't get around. So what do I do?
I've come to my conclusion that The One Right Way to make my game is simply the one that gets it onto the computer screen. Yes, I may regret some decisions I make along the way, but as long as I stay true to the quality of my vision, I should end up making one heck of a game.
ONE Update: ONE V 2.0 is progressing well, and soon will be ready to post. I've completely revamped skill usage, so it's not totally compatible with version 1; but then I don't know of anybody playing version 1, so...:)
ONE's first world is going to be a fantasy world - my goal is to create something very gentle and beautiful, more in line with Ursula K. Le Guin, C. S. Lewis and Zilpha Keatly Snyder than Tolkien and Moorcock. This is not to say that action and adventure won't abound, but for the most part, this is going to be a civilized (if simple) world. I haven't named it yet, but I have decided on some characters and stories (Kira will be there).
Another ONE update: an alpha of version 2 is up! Check the ONE page for a copy, and please mail me your comments! Also, the Links page is finally complete and ready to springboard you through the web!
Okay, that looks really awful, but I've actually updated the site a few times in the meantime without updating the news page. We've got some updates to the Games pages, with screen shots for several of the games (check out the System Shock mini-walkthrough). Coming VERY soon - notes from my just-completed AD&D campaign! And more stuff for ONE - promise!
