Scottish Towns & Villages |
O ne thing that still tickles my funnybone from time-to-time are the names of many Scottish towns and villages. I classify them into three categories, those that sound reasonably normal, those that sound like they are planets in the Klingon Empire, and those that sound like they belong in that Louis Carrol poem, Jabberwocky. The first category is not that interesting, so I'll ignore those, but here are a few of my favorites from the other two categories...
Klingon Empire |
Jabberwocky |
| Kilmarnock | Killiecrankie |
| Gairloch | Sanquhar |
| Giffnock | Milngavie |
| Kirkintilloch | Pitlochry |
| Blantyre | Castlemilk |
| Darvel | Wanlockhead |
| Greenock | Kingussie |
| Sorn | Wamphray |
| Largs | Troon |
| Dornoch | Grantown on Spey |
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list... Click on the town names above and MapQuest will show you where they are. From there, you can spot dozens more Klingon/Jabberwocky names...
By the way, I lived in a quaint little Scottish village named Strathaven. Some people pronounced this like Strath-haven, but most people pronounced it like Stray-ven. It was a very, very nice little town and the neighbors were wonderful! However, I did find it amusing that the sign post leaving one of the neighboring towns conststently had the "St" painted over so that it read "rat haven". I guess kids are the same the world over...
For the record, I never saw one rat the whole time I lived there...
