Lacresha Murray freed; Courts reverse shoddy police tactics

News on Austin police accountability churns fast and furious these days. In one of the most joyous of recent events -- correcting one of the most horrendous lapses in APD accountability to disgrace our city -- an appeals court ordered a retrial after determining that the APD improperly questioned then-11-year-old murder suspect LaCresha Murrray, who as a result spent her last three-plus years in prison. This case also highlights the collusion of police and the medical examiner, Robert Bayardo, who used shoddy techniques and rash assumptions to craft his findings in support of the cops' theory of the crime. Bayardo used similarly strained logic to clear cops of killing unarmed black Austinites like Rodney Wickware, Evans Ekiye and Grill Couch.

As April is National Poetry Month, the Hall of Shame offers the following Haiku in LaCresha's honor:

LaCresha Murray
Framed by ambitious lawyers
Deserves to be free.

You may view ample information about this ignominious case at the website of LaCresha's support group, People of the Heart.
