Nature of Firm:

The West Texas and Lubbock Railroad operates freight service from a connection with the BNSF railroad at Lubbock, TX to Seagraves, 64 miles. A branch line operates from Doud to Whiteface, 39.8 miles. A total of 104 miles are operated. Rail is 85/90 pound. Track capacity is 286,000 pounds. Communities currently served by WTLR include Doud, Ropesville, Brownfield, Wellman, Seagraves, Hurlwood, Levelland and Whiteface. In June of 2000 the WTLR sold a 6.5 mile corridor of land to the State of Texas for use in constructing the East-West freeway connecting downtown Lubbock and Texas Tech University to the outer beltway in Lubbock, Texas.

Traffic includes saltcake, chemicals, molten sulfur, grain, cotton, cottonseed oil, farm equipment, and lumber - approximately 4,000 carloads a year.

The line was built by the South Plains and Santa Fe and opened into Seagraves on July 1, 1918. The branch to Whiteface opened on December 1, 1925. The company was leased to Panhandle and Santa Fe in January, 1931. Santa Fe turned over the line to the Seagraves, Whiteface and Lubbock Railroad on April 2, 1990. The West Texas and Lubbock Railroad acquired it on November 1, 1995.

The company is a subsidiary of RailAmerica, Inc.
