I'll give you an old A-H folk tale I know (albeit a true one). Once upon a time, there was a man known as Fabulous (or Fantastic... I forget) Freddy. Freddy was from Philadephia, and he used to manage a game room some where in one of the deepest darkest parts. Fabulous Fred was old and grey and pushing fifty (and this was in ancient times... about 1980 I think).
Enter two more characters... Jesse Douty & Joe Campbell who were at the time ranked #1 & 2 respectively in the country. Well... legend has it that they found Fabulous Fred hiding in his lair, and challenged him for the table. Try as they might, they just could not beat Fabulous Freddy. He whipped their butts soundly every time with his Fantastic Forehand. This went on for several years, and proved to be an effort in futility, as Fabulous Fred faded into forever, never to be heard from again. Legend has it that Fabulous Fred resides somewhere in West Philadelphia, but he has yet to be found.
Anyway... that's my slightly embellished version of the story (and it's really not that far off from what I understand). Joe Campbell told it to me years ago, and it was collaborated by Mike Barry, Jesse, and I think Mark Robbins.
